Koelhuis Courtyards

In the Koelhuis District, courtyards will serve as versatile, communal spaces that enhance the social, cultural, and aesthetic value of the area. These courtyards will host makerspaces, office spaces for cultural organizations, art residencies, and community spaces, continuing the tradition of courtyards as integral to community life.

Courtyards are designed as the junction between the cultural venue, the resident community, and the extended neighborhood, contributing to the overall liveliness of the area. It is not destined for one individual function; instead, it combines different uses—e.g., artist studios, ateliers, gathering areas, and makerspaces—to achieve close to 24/7 activation. The main function of the courtyards is to offer communal areas that provide opportunities for encounters, spontaneous interactions, and creative processes to emerge.

Makerspaces in the courtyards will provide a nurturing environment for makers of all backgrounds to explore their creativity, experiment with cutting-edge technologies, and engage in collaborative projects. Koelhuis District will serve as a catalyst for interdisciplinary collaborations, fostering a culture of hands-on learning, knowledge sharing, and innovation, empowering individuals to transform their ideas into tangible creations and contribute to the cultural and technological landscape of the Brainport area.
